Course Objectives

  • Obtain a working knowledge of the pathophysiology of Parkinson disease, medical interventions and disease progression.

  • Describe how sensory, motor and cognitive symptoms impact walking, balance, flexibility, strength and function in people with Parkinson disease.

  • Understand the research on exercise interventions for people with PD, including the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits.

  • Understand how to develop an individual and/or group exercise plan that is safe and addresses specific impairments found in people with Parkinson disease.

  • Recognize how to collaborate with healthcare professionals across the continuum of care to facilitate improved outcomes.

    The course will be held on March 28-29, 2025 at the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA (Buckhead) in Atlanta. Schedule: Friday, March 28: 12:30 to 5:00 pm; Saturday, March 29: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Cost: $435

  • What

    Lectures are combined with hands-on exercise experiences designed to prepare participants to lead evidence-based exercise programs that facilitate improved health and functional outcomes. Exercise professionals will build competency in five key areas: foundational understanding of Parkinson's disease, screening for safe participation, exercise program design, coaching for optimal movement at an appropriate intensity, and interprofessional collaboration.

  • Accreditation

    This course is a Parkinson’s Foundation Accredited Exercise Continuing Education Course, indicating that the curriculum has been reviewed and found to meet the rigorous Parkinson’s Foundation competency standards. This course provides 1.2 CECs from ACE.
